Leon Economides

Leon first started on radio in March 1982, working with Tony Sanderson, on his Chuckle & Chat show, on Radio 5. Staying on Radio 5 (later to become 5fm), he worked with radio greats such as Rafe Lavine (RockIt Scientists), Chris Prior (Priority Feature), and Phil Wright (Dinosaur Days).

He was with 5fm for around 20 years. He then moved to SAfm, with Rafe Lavine, where we stayed for a few years. He then had the opportunity of starting The RockFest on Radio Today (now 1485am), and he was with that station for about four years. He joined Mix93.8fm (then known as Radio Midrand) in 2009.

Given the freedom to recruit a whole bunch of presenters, some of whom, such as Mike Tymvios, had never been on radio before, he continued with The RockFest, and The RockFest has been a part of the station since then, Tuesdays through Fridays.

Leon loves hard rock, blues, metal, fusion, jazz, Latin Rock, Southern Rock, Brass Rock, Progressive Rock, Rarities, etc, and these are the genres he features on his “RockIt Scientist’ show. In addition to the Friday night RockIt Scientist Show, I also present a three hour (7pm to 10pm) Jazz & Blues Show, on Sunday nights.

It’s a pretty open kind of show, and if listener’s requests fit in with the kind of music he features, they are gladly entertained. He also has interviews with up and coming, as well as established bands / artists, and he encourages / promotes “lesser known” South African bands and artists.
